Engine oil in any vehicle is a critical lifeline. This is especially true in the case of the BMW S63TU engine. Regular servicing not only maintains current levels of performance but also helps reduce wear. BMW stipulates that the oil should be changed every 15,000 miles. We and other enthusiasts do not agree with this philosophy. Instead, we recommend oil changes every 5,000 miles to prevent sludge buildup and to ensure that the engine has fresh oil.

Note: Oil changes must be performed when the engine oil is at operating temperature. To remove the oil filter cap you must use a 86mm, 16 flat wrench. If you do not have one already you can order it from FCP Euro, part number CTA-2489 or BMW special tool 119 240. Torque for the oil filter cap is very specific. The o-ring must be lightly oiled. Initial torque is approximately 30N (22 ft lbs), release oil filter through 180°, with final torque of 40Nm (29.5 ft lbs). The oil pan drain plug must be replaced with the one included in the kit to 25Nm (18.5 ft lbs) of torque.
